Error 8: Effect RAM depleted on 8MB ESP32-S3 with QSPI PSRAM

What happened?

I installed WLED through the web page on my development board: ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 v1.0. Installation claims to be successful. I can connect and open the web interface.

Every time I open the web interface I get the error "Error 8: Effect RAM depleted".

I can not control the RGB LEDs (no output).

Although I did not install any effects. In default configuration but also when if I fix the LED configuration.

To Reproduce Bug

Open the web interface of the device. The popup with the error message appears.

Expected Behavior

No error message. LED controlling possible.

@dhebbeker effect RAM depleted usually appears only when you have a lot of LEDs (typically > 2048). If your default config only has ~30 LEDs, it could be a problem with a stale browser cache. Please try clearing the browsers cache & local storage (ctrl-F5 in MS Edge).

If the problem still persists after restart, we need to see the debug output on serial monitor for further analysis. To enable debug output, upload a custom build with -D WLED_DEBUG to your board.

I started with the default 30 LEDs and then reduced it to one, the one which is installed on that development board. Still, that error appeared. Also, I tried different browsers. But I didn't explicitly delete the cache of each of them. I will have to try this. If this is not successful, I will try a custom build with the debug option enabled. It will take at least a week until I have time to experiment with those approaches.

Here an update:

• I tried with refreshing the cache and using another browser - no effect ❌
• I also tried with another ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 v1.0 and ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 v1.1 - no effect ❌
• then I built and flashed the firmware using: platformio run --target upload --environment esp32s3dev_8MB_qspi
  and that worked! ✔️ My observations:
  • using the web installer the version installed was ESP32-S3_8MB_opi
  • but I installed ESP32-S3_8MB_qspi

As countercheck I flashed "opi" version with pio. And this way it also gives "error 8".

So I guess the problem is that the web installer installs the octo SPI instead of the quad SPI version on the ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1.

sounds reasonable - if the PSRAM mode is wrong, your S3 will play random games with you. In the past all -S3 with >=8MB flash were also OPI mode PSRAM, but it seems like some newer boards now come with the slower QSPI mode.

Unfortunately, the web-installer cannot tell from the outside if a board needs OPI or QSPI. @lost-hope @netmindz is the web-installer also offering the ESP32-S3_8MB_qspi binary?
