I wasn't able to push updates to this PR, created one with some adjustments here #124 If you are able I think this would be worth reviewing, I would love some more feedback before proceeding. A few tweaks were required to resolve an issue with bincode mostly. |

Added backwards compatibility to the previous format ensuring data isn't lost for consumers of the crate who upgrade.
