I based this off of @mattmassicotte's post at https://www.massicotte.org/leverage with the intention to have something tangible to discuss.

I invite all of you to veto and outright reject anything here: As far as I am concerned, it doesn't make sense to include any line that you don't feel comfortable keeping. This is not meant to prescribe anything. 🙏

I also welcome rephrasing parts of the text or leaving this out for now and discussing elsewhere.

My take here is that a lighter touch may be more appealing. What do you think about this?

Ways you can help:

  • Avoid Feedback Assistant
  • Avoid OS beta releases
  • Avoid sharing crash reports for Apple software
  • Avoid sharing analytics for Apple software
  • Avoid the Swift Forums and Evolution Process
  • Avoid buying Apple products

And remember, this is not all-or-nothing. Doing what you can makes a difference.

I'd like to really help make people feel like they don't have to make a commitment of any kind. And that Apple fans, not necessarily just developers, can help too.

I'd like to see "Act Different" written on devices at Apple stores.

Agreed, we can try to make that part of the CTA e.g.
Visiting an Apple Store? Try Pages with a large font saying "Act Different"

For turning off analytics and crash reports, I'd include some links on how to do it on macOS and iOS

For Swift evolution, I would also include to avoid boosting or posting about language features, tooling updates and promoting Swifty packages and frameworks. The goal being not to provide additional exposure/content engagement for the ecosystem, like "Did you know in SwiftUI..."

@mattmassicotte @kkostov This sounds great! Don't mind editing the file right away on this branch as far as I'm concerned. It's not Google Docs, but close. We have version control! :)

Actual technical instructions on how to help is an excellent idea!

Personally, I'm trying hard to strike a balance between something that will affect myself (ha!), affect other developers, and affect Apple. My goal is to find the things that will minimize the first two and maximize the last. The vast majority will be unwilling or unable to participate with large acts. But inspiring them to do something, and making them feel appreciated for small acts is, in my opinion, an important tactic.

One more observation from my comment on #7:

Can a protest against Swift and a protest against Apple be thought of independently?

  • How could a protest against Swift be framed and presented to an engineer that is ambivalent or hesitant to protest against Apple?

  • How could a protest against Apple be framed and presented to an engineer that is ambivalent or hesitant to protest against Swift?

I like "small acts" as a riff on "small bets"
