What is meant to be tracked under manufacturer

This field is ubiquitous across the models. However, it is not clear what is meant to be tracked. A few options come to mind:

• The entity that builds it. If we order PCBs fully assembled from PCBWay, is the manufacturer AIND or PCBWay?
• The entity that designed it.
• The entity that holds the copyright/design schematics

My general take is that ideally, I'd like to be able to google search manufacturer + part number and find the device.
Obviously for custom devices, that's not possible, so I suggest do what makes most sense for the device. You could even use "CUSTOM" for the manufacturer and avoid the conflict.
