GRANT FUNDING BRAINSTORM

In our July 15 2025 meeting, we discussed the idea of teaming up for various grant proposals, targeting both private (e.g., Simons Foundation) and public (NIH) funding.

THIS THREAD is to:

• brainstorm ideas
• allow investigators to find "matches" to develop proposals with
• disclose proposal aims in order to avoid potential collisions (i.e., team up around shared interests rather than compete)
• collect, share, and discuss relevant literature
• alert each other of relevant funding opportunities

STRENGTHS:

• PP/PC is a timely topic
• experiments are novel, massive & encompassing, and hypothesis-driven
• Allen Institute methodology is cutting-edge and innovative (e.g., SNAP2, multi-shank Neuropixels)
• open science (e.g., data already being free and open source) might fit new funding paradigms
• perhaps most importantly: we are a great team of experts who already demonstrated productive collaboration

SUGGESTIONS:

• for Simons: split into teams of 2-3 investigators (if any of us gets funded, the whole project benefits)
• for NIH: aim for a "bigger" grant (R01 or above) that we all can join (e.g., by "merging" the Simons proposals)

Simons Foundation Proposal Idea (Bastos & Maier, but open to anyone interested):

"Predicting More than One Thing at a Time" - using a tensor-based predictive processing model to test for second order predictions. This will be done by expanding p(A|B) to p(A|BⓧC), keeping the rest of the analysis to the established framework.
