Gradle 9.x requires Java 17, breaking Java 8 builds

High Severity

Gradle 9.3.1 requires Java 17 or later to run, but this project's CI tests with Java 8 (see .github/workflows/build-and-test.yml matrix) and the build explicitly targets Java 8 (sourceCompatibility = JavaVersion.VERSION_1_8 in build.gradle). This version bump from Gradle 8.9 to 9.3.1 will cause all Java 8 CI jobs to fail immediately when attempting to run the Gradle wrapper, as the JVM version requirement is not met.
