Summary

Implements stale-while-revalidate pattern for AssetBrowserModal to show cached assets immediately while refreshing in background.

Changes

AssetBrowserModal.vue

  • Reads assets directly from store cache via computed properties
  • Shows loading spinner only when loading AND no cached data exists
  • Simplified refresh logic: single refreshAssets() call on mount

assetsStore.ts

  • Added updateModelsForTag(tag) for tag-based fetching
  • Added updateModelsForKey() internal helper to unify node type and tag fetching
  • Cache key convention: node types as-is, tags prefixed with tag:
  • Added isEqual check before cache updates to prevent unnecessary re-renders

useModelUpload.ts

  • Simplified signature from UseAsyncStateReturn<...>['execute'] to () => Promise<unknown> | void

UX Improvement

Scenario Before After
First open Spinner → Assets Spinner → Assets
Re-open same type Spinner → Assets Instant + silent refresh
Re-open after download Spinner → Assets Cached + auto-update

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Migrates asset fetching to a store-backed cache keyed by nodeType/assetType/tag; components and tests now read/update assetsStore (maps and update methods) instead of calling assetService. useModelUpload callback signature simplified to onUploadSuccess.

Changes

Cohort / File(s) Summary
Store refactor
src/stores/assetsStore.ts
Introduced generic key-based caching, modelAssetsByNodeType/modelLoadingByNodeType maps, isEqual change detection, and updateModelsForTag(tag: string); updateModelsForNodeType routed through the new generic mechanism.
Component -> store migration
src/platform/assets/components/AssetBrowserModal.vue
Switched from assetService/useAsyncState to reading cacheKey-scoped assets/loading from assetsStore; added assetType prop; added refreshAssets that calls updateModelsForNodeType/updateModelsForTag; removed prior fetch/watch logic and assetDownloadStore usage.
Upload composable API
src/platform/assets/composables/useModelUpload.ts
Replaced execute?: UseAsyncStateReturn...['execute'] parameter with `onUploadSuccess?: () => Promise
Tests updated to store-backed mocks
src/platform/assets/components/AssetBrowserModal.test.ts
Replaced assetService mocks with a mocked useAssetsStore exposing modelAssetsByNodeType, modelLoadingByNodeType, updateModelsForNodeType, updateModelsForTag; updated assertions to target store methods and cache-key handling.

src/platform/assets/components/AssetBrowserModal.test.ts (1)

309-316: Test assertion contradicts component implementation.

The test expects the left panel to be hidden when showLeftPanel is undefined, but the component's logic (line 184-186 in AssetBrowserModal.vue) defaults to true:

const shouldShowLeftPanel = computed(() => {
  return props.showLeftPanel ?? true
})

Either the test description and assertion are incorrect, or the component behavior needs adjustment.

Proposed fix if the component behavior is correct

promise and should be made explicitly fire-and-forget or handled; update the
mount code where refreshAssets() is invoked so it either prefixes the call with
void (void refreshAssets()) to mark intentional fire-and-forget, or append a

Learning: In the ComfyUI_frontend project, Zod is on v3.x. Do not suggest Zod v4 standalone validators (z.uuid, z.ulid, z.cuid2, z.nanoid) until an upgrade to Zod 4 is performed. When reviewing TypeScript files (e.g., src/platform/remote/comfyui/jobs/jobTypes.ts) validate against Zod 3 capabilities and avoid introducing v4-specific features; flag any proposal to upgrade or incorporate v4-only validators and propose staying with compatible 3.x patterns.

Do not suggest consolidating them into a single import statement. Ensure type imports remain on their own line (import type { ... } from 'module') and regular imports stay on separate lines.

Learning: Prefer pure function declarations over function expressions (e.g., use function foo() { ... } instead of const foo = () => { ... }) for pure functions in the repository. Function declarations are more functional-leaning, offer better hoisting clarity, and can improve readability and tooling consistency. Learning: When accessing reactive properties from Pinia stores in TypeScript files, avoid using .value on direct property access (e.g., useStore().isOverlayExpanded). Pinia auto-wraps refs when accessed directly, returning the primitive value. The .value accessor is only needed when destructuring store properties or when using storeToRefs().

Learning: In Vue files across the ComfyUI_frontend repo, when a button is needed, prefer the repo's common button components from src/components/button/ (IconButton.vue, TextButton.vue, IconTextButton.vue) over plain HTML <button> elements. Learning: In Vue 3.5+ with <script setup>, when using defineProps<Props>() with partial destructuring (e.g., const { as = 'button', class: customClass = '' } = defineProps<Props>() ), props that are not destructured (e.g., variant, size) stay accessible by name in the template scope. This pattern is valid: you can destructure only a subset of props for convenience while referencing the remaining props directly in template expressions. Learning: In Vue components, avoid creating single-use variants for common UI components (e.g., Button and other shared components). Aim for reusable variants that cover multiple use cases. It’s acceptable to temporarily mix variant props with inline Tailwind classes when a styling need is unique to one place, but plan and consolidate into shared, reusable variants as patterns emerge across the codebase.

Learning: In the ComfyUI_frontend repository, for Vue components, do not add aria-label to buttons that have visible text content (e.g., buttons containing <span> text). The visible text provides the accessible name. Use aria-label only for elements without visible labels (e.g., icon-only buttons). Learning: In Comfy-Org/ComfyUI_frontend, in Vue component files, when a filled icon is required (e.g., 'pi pi-circle-fill'), you may mix PrimeIcons with Lucide icons since Lucide lacks filled variants. This mixed usage is acceptable when one icon library does not provide an equivalent filled icon. Apply consistently across Vue components in the src directory where icons are used, and document the rationale when a mixed approach is chosen.

Learning: In Vitest v4, when mocking functions that may be called as constructors (using new), the mock implementation must use function() or class syntax rather than an arrow function. Arrow mocks can cause '<anonymous> is not a constructor' errors. This is a breaking change from Vitest v3 where mocks could use an arrow function. Apply this guideline to test files that mock constructor-like calls (e.g., in tests under tests-ui, such as ComboWidget.test.ts) and ensure mock implementations are defined with function() { ... } or class { ... } to preserve constructor behavior.

src/platform/assets/composables/useModelUpload.ts (1)

9-11: LGTM! Clean API simplification.

The callback signature () => Promise<unknown> | void is appropriately generic and decouples the composable from the store's internal implementation. The await correctly handles both sync and async callbacks.

Also applies to: 37-39

src/stores/assetsStore.ts (5)

1-4: LGTM!

Import of isEqual from es-toolkit aligns with project guidelines for utility functions.

333-349: LGTM! Clean key-based delegation.

The tag: prefix convention for tag-based cache keys effectively namespaces them from node-type keys, preventing collisions. The delegation pattern keeps the code DRY.

360-367: LGTM!

Non-cloud fallback correctly provides no-op implementations returning empty arrays.

369-375: LGTM!

Store properly exports the new updateModelsForNodeType and updateModelsForTag methods, maintaining a clear public interface as per coding guidelines.

Also applies to: 430-431

286-326: Race condition: concurrent calls with the same key execute state.execute() in parallel.

The lazy initialization pattern with useAsyncState(immediate: false) is correct for Pinia setup stores. However, when updateModelsForKey is called concurrently with the same key (as happens in the Promise.allSettled loop), the second call will not find the state in the cache immediately and proceed with an already-executing state.execute(). Add a concurrency guard at the start:

if (modelLoadingByNodeType.get(key)) {
  return modelAssetsByNodeType.get(key) ?? []
}

This prevents overlapping executions and returns cached results if a fetch is already in progress.

src/platform/assets/components/AssetBrowserModal.vue (3)

65-88: LGTM!

Imports are well-organized, and store initialization follows Vue 3 Composition API patterns.

106-125: LGTM! Correct stale-while-revalidate implementation.

The loading state logic (isStoreLoading && fetchedAssets.length === 0) correctly implements the stale-while-revalidate pattern - showing cached data immediately while background refresh occurs, and only displaying a loading spinner when no cached data exists.

143-150: LGTM!

The useAssetBrowser composable correctly receives the store-backed fetchedAssets computed ref, enabling reactive filtering when the store cache updates.

src/platform/assets/components/AssetBrowserModal.test.ts (3)

15-23: LGTM!

Store mock correctly provides the minimal interface needed for testing, with vi.fn() stubs for method call assertions.

186-192: LGTM!

Test cleanup properly clears the store's Maps and mocks between tests, ensuring test isolation.

232-274: LGTM! Comprehensive store integration tests.

Tests properly cover:

  • Store refresh triggered on mount for both nodeType and assetType
  • Cached assets displayed immediately (validating stale-while-revalidate UX)
  • Correct tag: prefix handling for cache keys

309-316: Test assertion contradicts component default behavior.

The test expects the left panel to NOT exist when showLeftPanel is undefined, but the component defaults shouldShowLeftPanel to true (line 185 in AssetBrowserModal.vue: props.showLeftPanel ?? true). When showLeftPanel is undefined, the template renders the #leftPanel slot, which causes the data-testid="left-panel" div to exist.

Update the test to either pass showLeftPanel: false to hide the panel, or change the expectation to toBe(true) to match the component's intended default behavior.

Learning: Prefer pure function declarations over function expressions (e.g., use function foo() { ... } instead of const foo = () => { ... }) for pure functions in the repository. Function declarations are more functional-leaning, offer better hoisting clarity, and can improve readability and tooling consistency. } to preserve constructor behavior.

src/platform/assets/composables/useModelUpload.ts (2)

9-11: LGTM! Simplified callback signature.

The change from the complex UseAsyncStateReturn execute signature to a simple optional callback improves the API surface and makes the composable easier to use. The () => Promise<unknown> | void type correctly handles both sync and async callbacks.

37-39: Callback invocation is correct.

The async wrapper appropriately awaits the optional callback, handling both sync and async implementations.

src/stores/assetsStore.ts (4)

2-2: Good use of es-toolkit for utility functions.

Using isEqual from es-toolkit aligns with the coding guidelines.

333-349: Clean public API for node-type and tag-based fetching.

The separation between updateModelsForNodeType and updateModelsForTag with the tag: prefix convention is clear and maintains backward compatibility while adding the new tag-based functionality.

364-366: Non-cloud fallback is appropriate.

Returning no-op async functions for non-cloud environments ensures the API contract is maintained without runtime errors.

283-326: Well-designed generic caching helper.

The updateModelsForKey helper consolidates the fetch-and-cache logic effectively. The isEqual check prevents unnecessary reactive updates when the fetched data hasn't changed, which is key to the stale-while-revalidate UX.

Regarding the fetcher capture: while useAsyncState instances are lazily created and cached with fetchers captured at creation time, this design is sound. The two public wrappers (updateModelsForNodeType and updateModelsForTag) ensure that each key is always paired with the same fetcher function—node types use their specific fetcher, and tags (prefixed with tag:) use theirs. The same key is never called with different fetchers, so the cached useAsyncState instance safely executes the correct fetcher on subsequent calls.

src/platform/assets/components/AssetBrowserModal.vue (2)

106-125: Stale-while-revalidate pattern implemented correctly.

The cacheKey computed property cleanly handles both nodeType and assetType props. The isLoading logic at lines 123-125 correctly implements the stale-while-revalidate UX by only showing the spinner when loading AND no cached data exists, allowing users to see stale data immediately while refresh happens in the background.

140-141: Integration with useModelUpload is correct.

Passing refreshAssets to useModelUpload ensures the store cache is refreshed after a successful upload, maintaining data consistency.

src/platform/assets/components/AssetBrowserModal.test.ts (3)

15-23: Store mock is well-structured.

The mock correctly provides the reactive Maps and stub functions matching the actual store's API surface. Using vi.fn() for the update methods allows proper assertion of calls.

188-192: Proper cleanup in beforeEach.

Clearing the Maps and resetting mocks between tests prevents test pollution.

232-274: Good coverage of store integration.

The tests properly verify:

  • Store refresh is triggered on mount for nodeType
  • Cached assets are displayed immediately
  • Tag-based refresh via updateModelsForTag
  • Correct cache key prefix (tag:) for assetType props

This validates the stale-while-revalidate behavior.

🧹 Nitpick | 🔵 Trivial

Consider handling empty cacheKey edge case.

When neither nodeType nor assetType is provided, cacheKey is an empty string and refreshAssets returns an empty array without calling any store method. This is likely intentional, but consider adding a warning in development mode if the component is mounted without either prop.

In @src/platform/assets/components/AssetBrowserModal.vue around lines 127 - 135,
The component currently returns an empty array from refreshAssets when neither
props.nodeType nor props.assetType is set (resulting in an empty cacheKey); add
a development-only warning to surface this misconfiguration by checking both
props (props.nodeType and props.assetType) either inside refreshAssets or in the
component lifecycle (e.g., onMounted) and, if both are falsy and
process.env.NODE_ENV !== 'production', call console.warn (or the app logger)
with a clear message referencing AssetBrowserModal and the props so developers
know the component was mounted without nodeType or assetType.

In @src/platform/assets/components/AssetBrowserModal.test.ts:
- Around line 186-190: The shared mock store maps are persisting between tests:
update the beforeEach that currently calls vi.clearAllMocks() to also reset the
store state by either re-instantiating the mock store via useAssetsStore()
inside beforeEach or explicitly clearing the Maps
(mockStore.modelAssetsByNodeType.clear() and
mockStore.modelLoadingByNodeType.clear()); reference the mockStore,
modelAssetsByNodeType, modelLoadingByNodeType, and beforeEach to locate where to
add the reset so each test runs with a fresh store.
- Around line 230-272: Add tests to assert the stale-while-revalidate behavior:
when mounting with nodeType 'CheckpointLoaderSimple' test both loading states
using mockStore.modelLoadingByNodeType and mockStore.modelAssetsByNodeType;
specifically add a test that sets
modelLoadingByNodeType('CheckpointLoaderSimple') = true with no cached data and
assert AssetGrid.props('loading') is true, another that sets
modelLoadingByNodeType true plus cached assets in modelAssetsByNodeType and
assert AssetGrid.props('loading') is false while assets are present, and a test
that sets cached assets then mounts via createWrapper and verifies
mockStore.updateModelsForNodeType('CheckpointLoaderSimple') is still called to
ensure background refresh; use the existing helpers createTestAsset,
createWrapper and query the AssetGrid component in each test.
- Around line 15-23: The mock store's modelAssetsByNodeType Map is typed as
Map<string, unknown[]>; change it to Map<string, AssetItem[]> to match real
store types: import the AssetItem type at the top of the test file (using
`import type { AssetItem } from '...'` or equivalent), then update the mock
definition for modelAssetsByNodeType to new Map<string, AssetItem[]>(), keeping
useAssetsStore, modelLoadingByNodeType, updateModelsForNodeType and
updateModelsForTag unchanged so tests retain behavior but gain proper type
safety.

Learning: In the ComfyUI_frontend repository, lint rules require keeping 'import type' statements separate from non-type imports, even if importing from the same module.

Apply this guideline across TypeScript files in Comfy-Org/ComfyUI_frontend, including story and UI component code, except where a function expression is semantically required (e.g., callbacks, higher-order functions with closures).

If formatting issues are detected, rely on the CI formatter or re-run pnpm format. 31-142: LGTM: Well-structured component mocks for test isolation.

The component mocks effectively isolate the AssetBrowserModal component for unit testing:

  • Properly expose props and emits for behavioral testing
  • Use data-testid attributes for accessible test selectors
  • Include slot support where needed (BaseModalLayout, LeftSidePanel)
  • i18n mocking is consistent across both direct and vue-i18n imports

This approach aligns with the testing guidelines to focus on behavioral coverage rather than implementation details.

Learning: In Vue files across the ComfyUI_frontend repo, when a button is needed, prefer the repo's common button components from src/components/button/ (IconButton.vue, TextButton.vue, IconTextButton.vue) over plain HTML <button> elements. These components wrap PrimeVue with the project’s design system styling. Use only the common button components for consistency and theming, and import them from src/components/button/ as needed.

Learning: In Vue single-file components, allow inline Tailwind CSS class strings for static classes and avoid extracting them into computed properties solely for readability. Prefer keeping static class names inline for simplicity and performance. For dynamic or conditional classes, use Vue bindings (e.g., :class) to compose classes.

Applies to all Vue files in the repository (e.g., src/**/*.vue) where Tailwind utilities are used for static styling.

Apply this guideline to Vue components across the codebase (all .vue files).

Learning: Prefer pure function declarations over function expressions (e.g., use function foo() { ... } instead of const foo = () => { ... }) for pure functions in the repository. Function declarations are more functional-leaning, offer better hoisting clarity, and can improve readability and tooling consistency. Apply this guideline across TypeScript files in Comfy-Org/ComfyUI_frontend, including story and UI component code, except where a function expression is semantically required (e.g., callbacks, higher-order functions with closures).

Learning: In test files, prefer selecting or asserting on accessible properties (text content, aria-label, role, accessible name) over data-testid attributes. This ensures tests validate actual user-facing behavior and accessibility, reducing reliance on implementation details like test IDs.

106-141: Stale-while-revalidate pattern implemented correctly.

The implementation aligns well with the PR objectives:

  • cacheKey derives the correct key from nodeType or assetType (with tag: prefix)
  • fetchedAssets reads directly from the store cache for instant display
  • isLoading only shows spinner when loading AND no cached data exists
  • refreshAssets() correctly delegates to store methods and is properly marked with void prefix to avoid floating promise warnings
  • useModelUpload integration enables post-upload background refresh

This achieves the intended UX: cached assets display immediately while background refresh occurs silently.

15-23: Type safety issue resolved.

The previous review flagged unknown[] for modelAssetsByNodeType, but the current code correctly uses Map<string, AssetItem[]> on line 17. This provides proper type safety for the tests.

🧹 Nitpick | 🔵 Trivial

Add tests to verify stale-while-revalidate behavior described in PR objectives.

The PR implements a "stale-while-revalidate pattern" where the loading spinner is shown only when loading AND no cached data exists. However, the current tests don't verify these key behaviors:

  1. Loading spinner visibility conditional on cache state (loading + no cache = show spinner; loading + has cache = hide spinner)
  2. Background refresh occurs even when displaying cached assets

The test "displays cached assets immediately from store" (lines 240-251) verifies cached data is shown but doesn't confirm that updateModelsForNodeType is still called for background refresh.

📝 Suggested tests for stale-while-revalidate behavior
it('shows loading spinner only when no cached data exists', async () => {
  mockStore.modelLoadingByNodeType.set('CheckpointLoaderSimple', true)
  // No cached data

  const wrapper = createWrapper({ nodeType: 'CheckpointLoaderSimple' })

  const assetGrid = wrapper.findComponent({ name: 'AssetGrid' })
  expect(assetGrid.props('loading')).toBe(true)
})

it('hides loading spinner when cached data exists during refresh', async () => {
  const assets = [createTestAsset('asset1', 'Cached Model', 'checkpoints')]
  mockStore.modelAssetsByNodeType.set('CheckpointLoaderSimple', assets)
  mockStore.modelLoadingByNodeType.set('CheckpointLoaderSimple', true)

  const wrapper = createWrapper({ nodeType: 'CheckpointLoaderSimple' })

  const assetGrid = wrapper.findComponent({ name: 'AssetGrid' })
  expect(assetGrid.props('loading')).toBe(false)
  expect(assetGrid.props('assets')).toHaveLength(1)
})

it('triggers background refresh even when cached data is displayed', async () => {
  const assets = [createTestAsset('asset1', 'Cached Model', 'checkpoints')]
  mockStore.modelAssetsByNodeType.set('CheckpointLoaderSimple', assets)

  createWrapper({ nodeType: 'CheckpointLoaderSimple' })
  await flushPromises()

  expect(mockStore.updateModelsForNodeType).toHaveBeenCalledWith('CheckpointLoaderSimple')
})

272, Add unit tests to cover the stale-while-revalidate behavior: verify loading
spinner logic by setting mockStore.modelLoadingByNodeType for
'CheckpointLoaderSimple' with and without mockStore.modelAssetsByNodeType cached
assets and assert AssetGrid.props('loading') is true when loading and no cache,
but false when loading and cache exists (also assert assets length); and add a
test that sets cached assets then mounts the component and awaits flushPromises
to assert mockStore.updateModelsForNodeType('CheckpointLoaderSimple') is still
called to confirm background refresh.

i've been following this pattern as well but never asked -- do these console errors get picked up by Sentry or Datadog?

nit - maybe refactor to reduce size of try block and remove early return?
