BetterVR 0.9.14

BetterVR 0.9.14

This is just a hotfix patch for the previous release due to some people encountering an error message that talked about Failed to apply patches for graphic pack 'Better VR' error when booting. This patch just resolves that error. Thanks to everyone who tested and reported this issue.

All Fixes:

  • Add assembly patch that just does nothing. This prevents a scenario where a previous patch_Settings.asm file would still existing, despite being no longer needed.

BetterVR 0.9.13

BetterVR 0.9.13

This update fixes the incorrectly centered aim for magnesis and the other runes, plus a few other quality-of-life features that people have asked for.

I've made a technical breakdown on how the magnesis ability uses the GPU to detect whether the pixel you're looking at is part of the magnesis-able item (in this case a chest) here. I personally always like when people write about the inner-workings of games, and this might give you an insight about what goes on when I develop this mod.

About the delay in updates... I really just like to make my updates bigger normally, so that people have something to look forward to whenever they drop. But sometimes stuff also takes a lot longer then I wish to cook, so I just think its better to get this major fix out for the people who are already playing.

Having said that, I did do a lot of good work for the larger features that I'm working on for the bigger 1.0 update.
I'm still undecided on what exactly I want that to be, but I'm trying to make the work I do multi-purpose (changing the arrows direction could prove useful for proper room scale support, just to give you an example of what I mean). But I'll share more on a later date. I think I want to do at least one more minor update until then.

All Fixes:

  • Fix magnesis (but also some other runes) requiring you to look off-center while aiming. Now they use the real center of your view.
  • Added an option to change the distance and size of the menu.
  • Make the "UI Follows Where You Look" option available to the third-person mode.
  • For developers: Add debug drawing to visualize in-game hitboxes, raycasts and much more.
  • For developers: Make stereo rendering assembly patches able to run without a VR headset for use with graphical debugging tools.

BetterVR 0.9.12

Another day, another hotfix update! Now that I've prevented myself from having version 0.9.9 be followed up by version 1.0, I've decided that releasing bug fixes as soon-ish as I finish working on them is more ideal. But I'm working on bigger features in the meantime too, which'll be reserved for 1.0 since they take more time to develop and polish.

This hotfix contains some major polishing bug fixes. The stamina wheel is now properly visible in first-person due to it previously using the player position while you were inside the body of the player. But that was after I had deforested half of hyrule to find a fix for the trees not being cut down, which is also a cool thing to have just™ work!

Besides that, @Holydh worked on improving the controls further and providing some fixes. The most important one being that magnesis no longer permanently changes your controller scheme.

All Fixes:

  • Fix stamina wheel being hard to keep on-screen while in the first-person mode
  • Trees can be cut down without pressing the attack button
  • Add various fixes related to inputs breaking after magnesis was used
  • Add haptics when you're able to throw a weapon over your right shoulder
  • Apply deadzone while riding on horses or on the mastercycle
  • Made the icons align better with the text inside the BetterVR menus

BetterVR 0.9.11

BetterVR 0.9.11

Another minor update before we'll see the 1.0 release. This time its to fix various issues and feedback adjustments for the new controller scheme. Players with long arms will definitely notice the new non-stretched out arms! To sweeten this release, I also added some cool performance upgrades so that the game run roughly 10% faster depending on how many different objects are on screen!

You might want to change your refresh rate to be able to notice this modest performance bump due to the performance "cliff" effect. I've written about that here, including other performance tweaks you can do, if you're curious. It also explains how emulators work (and why they're slow), how stereo rendering is added, why the mod runs slower then you'd expect, whether this mod can be ported and more! Its mostly just behind-the-scenes info though.

Performance Explained: Why this mod is tough to run?

General Improvements:

  • In-game arms no longer stretch out very unevenly when stretched, which is a major improvement for people with long arms.
  • Add whistling and magnesis control options to menu
  • Improve performance by not updating cascaded shadows for right eye and reusing the left eye
  • Improve performance by waiting for GPU after waiting for VR headset vsync

Input Fixes & Improvements:

  • The BetterVR menu can now be navigated with xbox, ps4 and other non-VR controllers (as long as you set them up to emulate the Wii U Gamepad in Cemu's input settings!)
  • You can now configure deadzone settings inside the VR menu
  • Weapons now auto-equip when selecting them from the quick menu
  • Switched parry to use acceleration instead of velocity, making it far more responsive
  • Using the bow with your right hand pulled back will no longer cause the player to throw their weapon
  • Improved riding controls - Left grip is for dismount and right grip is for dash

BetterVR 0.9.10

BetterVR 0.9.10

Just a hotfix update that fixes a big regression with the third-person camera. I might do a couple more hotfix updates before the big 1.0 release that'll have some cool features that take longer to develop.

All fixes:

  • Fixed a regression where using the third-person mode caused the camera to detach from the player model.
  • Make camera in first-person mode less likely to move all on its own by disabling built-in camera behaviour.
  • Fixed "Always Use Third-Person Camera Cutscenes" not working.
  • Make visual feedback when switching between the first- and third-person much faster.
  • Hide some settings that don't work for the third-person mode.

BetterVR 0.9.9

01 Feb 07:14

Choose a tag to compare

BetterVR 0.9.9

This release comes with a completely new settings menu that allows you to change settings while the game is running, and an entirely new controller scheme (which you can now view in-game too) that Holydh has been working on for a while now which make everything WAY better — especially equipping weapons. The game also looks way better, and basically ALL major bugs are now fixed! This includes nearly everything planned for version 1.0.

All fixes:

  • Major improvements to image quality due to fixed post-processing. Also fixes brightness issues.
  • Fixed sped-up cutscenes
  • Fixed broken skybox while being inside of a divine beast
  • Fixed camera and save thumbnails, which solves some annoying quests
  • Fixed game inventory screen
  • Fixed enemies not being able to see you sometimes
  • Fixed button prompts for shrine exits
  • Fixed sleeping at campfires, lightning strikes occurring too often
  • Fixed elbows folding inwards. Also fixed shoulders (most noticeable for custom models)
  • Fixed Master Sword pulling QTE
  • Fixed Master Cycle acceleration
  • Fixed camera being underwater while swimming
  • Fixed regressions on AMD GPU

All additions

  • Entirely new controller scheme, uses body slot system (grab swords and bows over your shoulders, or use runes from your waist)
    • You can also hold the rune button when playing seated, or even use a stick direction + rune button as an alternative dpad selector.
  • New shield system: hold up a shield to defend, and do a parry motion to deflect (experimental)
  • Add new in-game settings menu to change player height offset and camera mode in real time.
    • There's also a controller/help tab inside the game so that you don't have to memorize everything anymore.
  • Game camera now lowers when you press the crouch button
  • Better rumble for various actions
  • Add magnesis controls (which allows you to pull and push objects using gestures)
  • Add scope button (its still not super reliable)

BetterVR 0.9.8

BetterVR 0.9.8

This is more of a hotfix update for yesterday's release because there were a few bugs that sneaked in, especially when using different OpenXR runtimes, and there were some good improvements that could be done to swimming and horse riding.

All changes:

  • Player height now functions properly. The main menu and inventory is no longer too high when using SteamVR.
  • Air Link interpolation should be better when using the player height offset, since the height offset that was added likely affected its interpolation.
  • You'll now always swim at a fixed water height just above the water, like you'd do in real life.
  • SteamVR's OpenXR runtime now has working VR controllers while being in a menu or while using gyro controls.

BetterVR 0.9.7

BetterVR 0.9.7

Since it's been a few days, this update ended up being bigger then I initially was aiming for. Since its a lot of changes, I think its best to just list all of them.

All changes:

  • VR controllers can be used as gyro/motion controls. This allows you to 100% all the shrines, koroks and quests (the photos are black, but they do work).
  • Minimap, menu and dialogue boxes and other UI elements that had holes before are now fixed
  • Fix player being too high while riding horses or other animals (for the most part)
  • Fix arrows not shooting at your crosshair when using the player height offset setting. There's also more player height offset options.
  • Fix player hands not being controllable during dialogue and other scripted events
  • Remove rain splatter vfx partially since the 2D-ness doesn't really work in VR
  • Add accessibility UI color option to BetterVR settings to use a custom color that is more visible. Useful for making the crosshair easier to see.
  • Improved cutscene settings and prevent some in-game settings from being changed to prevent control issues.
  • Improved rendering systems to potentially improve GPU compatibility, specifically with AMD Vega GPUs. Note that from some testing it made no difference (yet).

BetterVR 0.9.6

12 Jan 03:26

Choose a tag to compare

BetterVR 0.9.6

It took a couple of days to figure out, but double gravity is now fixed! A bunch of puzzles that required launching yourself or using the paraglider are now playable, and it should overall be way more enjoyable. It also happens to fix swimming, which made some towers or boss fights surprisingly hard. And it fixes flurry rushes. And likely some other things related to player movement. It also fixes a bunch of animations being too fast.

All changes:

  • Fix the player experiencing double gravity (noticeable while being launched or gliding) by not running the player update job every frame
  • Allow OpenXR (and your VR headset interface) to close the game properly
  • Update some cutscene settings to be in third-person or first-person

If you want to donate

Since people have asked me how they can donate (which is very kind!) I have enabled GitHub sponsorships on my profile.
This mod is fully free and open-source (and will stay that way). But I appreciate the generosity of people that want to donate!

Once the most important bugs are fixed, I want to work on some big features like dual wielding, bow controls and much more. So as a nice way to give back, I'll be sending polls every few weeks to my GitHub sponsors about what they would like to see next so that they have some input on what I'll work on next. Of course I'll still be reading the Discord too.

BetterVR 0.9.5

BetterVR 0.9.5

Reworked the rendering code so that it allows us to run OpenXR on the rendering thread. This fixes all the stutter-y audio issues, makes loading faster and also stabilizes performance. It even gives a small performance bump. Also, if you press F3 there's an advanced FPS counter that can potentially show these improvements.

If this version no longer loads while with previous releases you got in-game, please report it on our GitHub.

All changes:

  • Move OpenXR rendering (and waiting) to Cemu's rendering thread, which resolves stuttery audio issues, faster loading and a minor performance improvement.
  • Add work-in-progress FPS overlay when you press F3. It shows more VR related info then Cemu's FPS counter.
  • Reworked and cleaned up the rendering code.
