this is how I figured out the motor steering by 4 relays:

        relay1                       relay2                       relay3                         relay4

R3 NO    12VDC-   nothing     R3 NC    12VDC+  nothing    R1NO     MotorBLK  R2NO        R1NO     MotorGRN  R2NO
R4 NC                         R4 NO

So Relay 1 and 2 control the power.

Relay 3 and 4 control the direction of the motor:

Relay to NC: plus to black and - to green.
Relay to NO: plus to green and - to black.

without relay 1 and 2, power would always be on. I could set relay 3 ON and 4 Off to stop motor, but there would be power to the motor.

some may see this as logic, but for me this was a major confusion.
