Summary

  • The admission controller now auto-selects the container registry based on the detected cloud provider instead of hardcoding gcr.io/datadoghq
  • EKS → public.ecr.aws/datadog, GKE → gcr.io/datadoghq, AKS → datadoghq.azurecr.io, default → registry.datadoghq.com
  • Explicit user configuration (admission_controller.container_registry or webhook-specific overrides) still takes precedence over auto-detection
  • Added datadoghq.azurecr.io and registry.datadoghq.com to the known DD registries list for image resolution

Motivation

Non-GKE customers (EKS, AKS, on-prem) were pulling images from gcr.io/datadoghq by default, incurring unnecessary cross-cloud egress costs. This change makes the default smarter by leveraging the existing cloud provider detection in the cluster agent.

Test plan

  • Unit tests for defaultRegistryForProvider covering all providers
  • Unit tests for ContainerRegistry covering specific override, global override, and auto-detection paths
  • Updated existing tests to expect new default registry (registry.datadoghq.com) when no cloud provider is detected
  • E2E tests run locally on Kind (AWS). The test provisions a Kind cluster, deploys the agent with APM auto-instrumentation enabled targeting the registry-test namespace, then:
    • TestInitContainerRegistry: waits for a pod to be mutated by the admission controller and verifies all Datadog-injected init containers pull from the expected registry (registry.datadoghq.com on Kind, public.ecr.aws/datadog on EKS, gcr.io/datadoghq on GKE)
    • TestInitContainersRunning: verifies no init container enters ImagePullBackOff/ErrImagePull and the pod reaches Running or Succeeded
    • The test correctly found init containers injected by the cluster agent. It currently fails against the published DCA (v3.155.1, old default) — it will pass in CI once qa_dca builds the DCA with our changes.
  • CI wiring: new-e2e-admission-controller-kind, new-e2e-admission-controller-eks, new-e2e-admission-controller-gke jobs trigger on changes to pkg/clusteragent/admission/**/* or test/new-e2e/tests/admission-controller/**/*
  • AKS: no AKS provisioner in E2E CI. To test manually: E2E_PROVISIONER=aks dda inv new-e2e-tests.run --targets=./tests/admission-controller/...

Instead of defaulting to gcr.io/datadoghq, the admission controller now
auto-selects the container registry based on the detected cloud provider
(EKS → public.ecr.aws/datadog, GKE → gcr.io/datadoghq, AKS →
datadoghq.azurecr.io, other → registry.datadoghq.com). This reduces
cross-region egress and improves pull latency for non-GKE environments.

The global config key admission_controller.container_registry no longer
has a hardcoded default; explicit user configuration still takes
precedence over auto-detection. The DD registries list for image
resolution now includes the Azure and unified registries.

Split the single Kind-only CI job into three per-cloud jobs so the
registry auto-detection is actually validated on each cloud provider:
- Kind: validates default fallback (registry.datadoghq.com)
- EKS: validates public.ecr.aws/datadog selection
- GKE: validates gcr.io/datadoghq selection

- `TestInitContainerRegistry` now checks init containers use the exact
  expected registry for the provisioner (EKS→public.ecr.aws/datadog,
  GKE→gcr.io/datadoghq, Kind→registry.datadoghq.com) instead of any
  known Datadog registry.
- Add `TestInitContainersRunning` that fails if any Datadog-injected
  init container enters ImagePullBackOff or ErrImagePull, and verifies
  the pod reaches Running or Succeeded phase.
