Untracking .envrc and adding it to .gitignore makes git delete your own version of the file whenever you switch from a branch that is missing the file to a branch that has it.

I think it's maybe less annoying to just re-commit it, and have it source a local file

Summary of Changes

Hello @ss-es, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request refines the project's environment management by introducing a standard .envrc file that sources a user-specific .envrc.local file. This change addresses the issue of .envrc files being deleted during branch switches and provides a cleaner way for developers to manage their local environment variables without affecting the shared repository, while also incorporating security measures for direnv.

Highlights

  • New .envrc file: A new .envrc file has been added to the repository, which is now tracked by Git.
  • Local environment sourcing: The new .envrc file is configured to source a local, untracked file named .envrc.local, allowing for personalized environment configurations.
  • Direnv security configuration: The .envrc file utilizes require_allowed for flake.nix, flake.lock, and .envrc.local to enhance security by requiring direnv allow when these files change.
  • .gitignore update: The .gitignore file has been updated to ignore .envrc.local instead of .envrc, ensuring that user-specific environment configurations are not committed to the repository.

🧠 New Feature in Public Preview: You can now enable Memory to help Gemini Code Assist learn from your team's feedback. This makes future code reviews more consistent and personalized to your project's style. Click here to enable Memory in your admin console.

Code Review

The pull request introduces a new .envrc file and modifies .gitignore to improve the handling of environment variables with direnv. The change aims to prevent accidental deletion of local .envrc files by having a version-controlled .envrc source a local, untracked .envrc.local file. This is a good approach for managing environment-specific configurations.

# `require_allowed` requires direnv version >= 2.38,
# but should not cause issues on older versions of direnv

The comment states that require_allowed should not cause issues on older versions of direnv, but it's generally safer to use features that are widely supported or provide clear fallback mechanisms. While this might not be a critical issue, it's good practice to ensure compatibility or explicitly document the minimum required direnv version if this feature is essential.
