@cowtowncoder could you merge this to 2.14 and forward merge to master? I can look at adding follow up PRs after this is merged. This PR does not affect the behaviour of jackson-core - ie the new code is not called by the existing code. |

@cowtowncoder getting this PR merged to branch 2.14 and then subsequently merged forward to master will greatly reduce the size of the other PRs - and this one should merge cleanly to both 2.14 and master since it is new code.
