Troubleshooting‐FAQ
Q: I get "permission denied" or changes are not applied.
A: Most write operations require root. Run:
sudo usrgrp-managerIf you prefer granular elevation, run the app as root only when you need to apply changes.
Q: Users or groups are missing, or edits don't stick.
A: Your system may be using centralized identity (LDAP/SSSD/AD) or other NSS modules. usrgrp-manager manages local accounts. Remote users/groups may be read-only or filtered by NSS. Verify with:
getent passwd someuser | cat
getent group somegroup | catQ: Errors referencing locks or busy files.
A: Another process could be modifying /etc/passwd or /etc/group. Close other user/group tools (e.g., usermod, graphical tools) and retry. Ensure there is no concurrent configuration management run.
Q: Why am I warned when deleting some groups?
A: Deleting groups with low GIDs can break services. The UI shows a prominent warning for low GID groups (e.g., GID < 1000) as a reminder before you proceed. It does not block the action; you can still continue if you know what you're doing.
Q: What are the keyboard shortcuts?
A: See Keyboard Shortcuts.
Q: How do I refresh the lists?
A: Use the refresh action or reopen the app. If the underlying system changed (e.g., via useradd), a refresh should pick up new entries.
