CASCADE Memory Lite

Persistent Memory for AI Systems

A production-grade, lightweight memory system for AI applications. No GPU required. Just RAM you already have.

Features

  • 6-Layer Memory Architecture - Organized storage for different memory types
  • SQLite + RAM Disk - Permanent storage with blazing fast operations
  • Full-Text Search - Fast semantic search with SQLite FTS5
  • Auto Layer Detection - Smart routing based on content analysis
  • Cross-Platform - Windows and Linux support
  • MCP Compatible - Works with Claude and other MCP-enabled systems
  • Zero Dependencies - Just Python standard library

Architecture

[Disk SQLite] ←→ [RAM Disk SQLite] ←→ [MCP Server] ←→ [Your AI]
  (permanent)      (blazing fast)      (protocol)     (application)

Memory Layers:

Layer Purpose Example
Episodic Events & experiences "Debugged the auth system on Tuesday"
Semantic Facts & knowledge "RSI above 70 indicates overbought"
Procedural Processes & methods "To deploy: git push origin main"
Meta Self-reflection "This approach isn't working"
Identity Core configuration "Primary function: code review"
Working Active session "Currently fixing login bug"

Quick Start

Installation

pip install cascade-memory-lite
# or
git clone https://github.com/For-Sunny/cascade-memory-lite
cd cascade-memory-lite
pip install -e .

Basic Usage

from cascade_memory import CascadeMemory, MemoryLayer

# Initialize (disk-only mode)
memory = CascadeMemory(disk_path="./my_memories")

# Store a memory
memory.remember(
    "API rate limits are 100 requests per minute",
    layer=MemoryLayer.SEMANTIC,
    importance=0.9
)

# Auto-detect appropriate layer
memory.remember("Fixed the authentication bug today")

# Search memories
results = memory.recall("rate limits")
for r in results:
    print(f"[{r['layer']}] {r['content']}")

# Get statistics
print(memory.get_stats())

With RAM Disk (Maximum Performance)

from cascade_memory import CascadeMemory
from ramdisk_manager import get_cascade_ramdisk_path

# Auto-detect RAM disk
ram_path = get_cascade_ramdisk_path()

memory = CascadeMemory(
    disk_path="./my_memories",      # Permanent storage
    ram_path=str(ram_path),         # Fast operations
    sync_interval=60                # Auto-sync every 60 seconds
)

# All operations now run at RAM speed
# Automatic background sync to disk for persistence

As MCP Server

# Run the server
python mcp_server.py --auto-ram

# With custom paths
python mcp_server.py --disk-path ./memories --ram-path R:/cascade

Claude Desktop configuration:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "cascade-memory": {
      "command": "python",
      "args": ["/path/to/mcp_server.py", "--auto-ram"]
    }
  }
}

RAM Disk Setup

Windows

Option 1: ImDisk (Recommended)

  1. Download from: https://sourceforge.net/projects/imdisk-toolkit/
  2. Install and create RAM disk on R: drive (512MB+)

Option 2: Other RAM disk software

  • SoftPerfect RAM Disk
  • AMD Radeon RAMDisk

Linux

# Option 1: Use /dev/shm (usually pre-configured)
# CASCADE auto-detects this

# Option 2: Create dedicated tmpfs
sudo mkdir /run/cascade
sudo mount -t tmpfs -o size=512M tmpfs /run/cascade
sudo chmod 777 /run/cascade

Verify Setup

python ramdisk_manager.py

MCP Tools

Tool Description
remember Store memory with automatic layer routing
recall Search memories with full-text search
query_layer Query specific layer with filters
get_status System status and memory counts
checkpoint Force sync RAM to disk

Performance

Mode Read Write Notes
Disk Only ~1-5ms ~2-10ms Good for most uses
With RAM Disk <0.5ms <1ms High-frequency access
FTS Search ~5-20ms - Depends on corpus size

API Reference

CascadeMemory

CascadeMemory(
    disk_path: str = "./cascade_data",  # Permanent storage
    ram_path: Optional[str] = None,      # RAM disk path
    sync_interval: int = 60,             # Auto-sync interval (seconds)
    auto_sync: bool = True # Enable background sync
)

Methods

  • remember(content, layer=None, importance=0.5, ...) - Store a memory
  • recall(query, layer=None, limit=10) - Search memories
  • query_layer(layer, limit=10, order_by="timestamp DESC") - Query specific layer
  • get_stats() - Get memory statistics
  • checkpoint() - Force sync to disk
  • close() - Cleanup and final sync

MemoryLayer Enum

MemoryLayer.EPISODIC    # Events, experiences
MemoryLayer.SEMANTIC    # Facts, knowledge
MemoryLayer.PROCEDURAL  # How-to, processes
MemoryLayer.META        # Reflection, analysis
MemoryLayer.IDENTITY    # Core configuration
MemoryLayer.WORKING     # Current session

Design Principles

  1. Persistence First - Disk is source of truth, RAM is acceleration
  2. Graceful Degradation - Works without RAM disk, just slower
  3. Zero Dependencies - Only Python stdlib required
  4. Simple Over Complex - SQLite beats distributed databases for most uses
  5. Cross-Platform - Same code runs on Windows and Linux
