Coal Fueling Toxic Air in Bulgaria

Data analysis from the Human Rights Watch report “Like a Prisoner in My Home”

Introduction

This repository includes analytical code that was used for all data analysis included in the Human Rights Watch report "Like a Prisoner in My Home" about how Bulgaria’s delayed decommissioning of coal-fired power plants contributes to dangerous air pollution, risks breaching new air quality standards and is slowing down the country’s transition away from fossil fuels.

This repository includes annotated processing and analysis code. All data analysis is in the R programming language.

Import

This folder includes the processing code used to process input data on facility-level energy transmission from the ENTSO-E Transparency Platform. The raw data is too large to be posted here. Data on "Actual Generation per Generation Unit" was downloaded by SFTP. See guide for downloading data via API/SFTP.

The src folder includes the processing script to filter data from both Maritsa 3 plant and the Maritsa Iztok plants.

The output folder includes a zipped file of the output from the processing script, e.g. the filtered data. Unzip this folder to run the descriptives code.

The input folder contains the other data used in the analysis:

  • import/input/stations/rakovski_daily.csv and input/stations/rakovski_Hourly SO2 PM10_2019_2025.csv provide daily and hourly SO2 data from the government monitoring station at Rakovski.
  • import/input/hrly_climate.csv is hourly climate data for Dimitrovgrad downloaded from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts accessed via the Open-Meteo.com Weather API.
  • import/input/population.xlsx is population data from Bulgaria National Statistics Institute
  • import/input/Health/health_Data.xlsx is health data pulled from government reports of the Health Directorate of Haskovo

Descriptives

The src folder includes the analysis script. The output folder is used to contain output from the analysis. The annotations in the script should describe what each code chunk does.
