sonarcloud was complaining because of map[key]!!, it's a false positive in our case, it will never throw a NPE

I can't verify in my installation that it works correctly, as I can't upgrade to kotlin 2.2 yet, but it is essentially a 1:1 copy from our production code, plus some docs and the new serialization stuff
