BREAKING CHANGE: Support for Node v16 and v18 has been dropped, and library exports have switched to ESM-only.
Updating the minimum Node version to v20 eases and switching to ESM reduced this project's maintenance burden, since many development dependencies have dropped support for EOL Node versions.
There are no changes that require any action configuration updates.
