NorESM3 diagnostics

Marit Sandstad edited this page Jul 2, 2025 · 7 revisions

A NorESM diagnostics toolbox was developed for NorESM2, based mainly on various bash, NCL, NCO and CDO scripts. This is currently still in use for some components, while others have moved on to new frameworks based on Python. The long term goal is to provide a new set of diagnostic tools for NorESM3 within the CUPiD framework. CUPiD provides a unified interface layer on top of diagnostics packages that are developed for the specific components.

Suggested diagnostics runs for test simulations

For each tag version of NorESM3, we should produce a PI control run and provide some standard diagnostics. Normally we will only run this for about 30 years, but in some cases this can be extended.

For short (~30 year) simulations

  • Run diagnostics with comparison to observational datasets
  • Run diagnostics with comparison to last tag version of NorESM3

For longer simulations

  • Run last 30 year segment with comparison to observational datasets
  • Run last 30 year segment with comparison to prior 60-30 year segment
