OpenGov Africa – Research & Data Team

Welcome to the Research & Data Team of OpenGov Africa.
This team is responsible for gathering, analyzing, and presenting the data that powers our projects, campaigns, and decision-making processes.

Purpose

Our mission is to provide reliable, actionable insights that inform OpenGov Africa’s advocacy, strategy, and public communications. We ensure that our work is rooted in evidence and that our community has access to well-organized, transparent information.

Responsibilities

  • Research & Analysis

    • Conduct desk research on governance, transparency, and civic engagement topics.
    • Collect and verify data from credible sources.
    • Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis to support OpenGov Africa initiatives.
  • Data Management

    • Organize datasets in a structured, reusable way (CSV, Google Sheets, etc.).
    • Maintain a central knowledge base for easy reference by other teams.
    • Ensure data accuracy, integrity, and documentation.
  • Reporting

    • Summarize findings into reports, infographics, and dashboards.
    • Provide insights that guide advocacy campaigns, communications, and events.
  • Collaboration

    • Work closely with the Marketing, HR, and Programs teams to provide data-driven insights.
    • Support the Operations & Project Management team with timely progress updates.

Tools & Workflows

  • GitHub Issues – Track research tasks, datasets, and progress (labeled research or data).
  • Google Drive – Store raw data, working documents, and final reports.

Getting Started

  1. Join the Discord – Introduce yourself in the #research-data channel.
  2. Check GitHub Issues – Look for open research tasks and comment if you’d like to claim one.
  3. Start Small – Pick one issue (e.g., data collection, report drafting) and contribute.
  4. Share Updates – Post your progress under the issue or in the team channel.

Deliverables

  • Curated datasets with clear documentation.
  • Written research summaries and recommendations.
  • Visual outputs (charts, infographics) for communications.
  • Timely updates to GitHub Issues and roadmap progress trackers.

Reporting

The Research & Data Team reports progress asynchronously via GitHub Issues, with oversight from the Operations & Project Management (Ops/PM) Team. Major findings are presented during cross-team updates or roadmap reviews.
