This PR collects the extension of 1D matrices to ND matrices in a single function as opposed to duplicating them in every function that generates matrices. This only supports 1D and 2D, but in my development branch, I can extend up to 3D.
There are still some issues with the 3D branch, so it's going to be a bit longer until that PR comes.
