In recognition of exceptional service to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute chapter of Upsilon Pi Epsilon

Award Description

The Robert P. Ingalls award was established to recognize those members of Upsilon Pi Epsilon who, through determination and dedication to the society, made lasting and immeasurable contributions to the development and advancement of the chapter. The award may only be awarded to one deserving member per year, but need not be awarded every year; it should be awarded in those cases where an individual's contribution has been worthy of such everlasting recognition.

Award Process

  1. President will make a motion to being nominations for the Robert P. Ingalls award.
  • Another member of the voting body must second the motion.
  • The floor is open to nominations, any voting member may nominate any graduating member of the society.
  • The nomination must be seconded by another voting member.
  • The nominating individual must give a short explanation why they believe the nominee to be a candidate for the award.
  • The body continues until no more nominations are offered. Upsilon motions to close the nomination process.
  • The motion to close nominations must be seconded by a voting member.
  • Nominees are requested to leave the meeting place.
  • The floor opens for discussion; members debate the nominees' worthiness of the award.
  • When debate has ended, the most senior member of the voting body shall make a motion to bring a vote on the nominees.
  • Candidates will be invited to return.
  • Vote is done by anonymous paper ballot. Voting members should write the name of a nominee or "abstain".
  • For a nominee to proceed to candidacy, he or she must receive a simple majority.
  • When a candidate has been selected, he or she must leave the room so the voting body can hold a second debate.
  • The floor is opened to debate, and students provide arguments for or against the candidate.
  • When debate has ended, the most senior member of the voting body shall make a motion to bring a vote on the candidate.
  • The motion must be seconded by another voting member.
  • The candidate will be readmitted to the meeting room.
  • Vote is done by anonymous paper ballot. Voting members should write "yea" or "nay" in favor of the candidate receiving the award.
  • The award is given only if the candidate receives "yeas" counting 75% or more of the number of voting members present.
