Backports the changes from #1878 to this branch, using a dedicated python script,
db5metasync, by @tomschr. The script lives in one of our internal repositories. It comes with slight side-effects (reformatting individual elements), but that cannot be avoided unfortunately.PR reviewer: Checklist
