Silakka54 Setup

This my personal setup for the silakka54 that I decided to share with you.

Modkeys

There are Main and Secondary mods.

Main Modkeys are on the left and right thumb clusters. I use these a majority of the time.

Secondary Modkeys are on the Layer 1 - Extended (Green). I use these when I need to combine modifiers that are on the same thumb cluster. I also use these when I need to access right thumb cluster mods with my left hand. These are one-shot stickies so they can be stacked in sequence. I got this idea from seniply.

Base Layer (White)

This Layout is based on the Gallium. Here you can also find the numrow, arrow keys, and page up/down. There is also a rofi key for app launching (I use window managers on Linux). Terminal key will open whatever terminal you bind to it.

Layer 1 - Extended Layer (Green)

This has the function row, media controls, and symbols. There are also mod keys. Use these as secondary modifier keys to the main modifiers on the thumb clusters.
The bottom row on the left half contains undo, redo, select all, copy, cut, and paste.

Layer 2 - Numpad Layer (Purple)

Toggle this layer on by pressing the Layer 1 + Layer 2 keys.

This contains the numpad (for quick data entry). The mouse arrow key arrangement on this layer makes it easier to move the mouse diagonally so I kept it separate from the base layer arrow setup.

Shift Layer (Red)

Self explanatory. Works just like on any other traditionalkeyboard.

Tap Hold (Yellow)

Tap and Hold to activate. Example: Tap and hold on the space thumbkey will simulate pressing the enter key. Macros for common words are here like "the", "and", etc. Also macros for punctuation.

Combos (Orange)

Press 2 keys together to activate. Example: B+L will simulate pressing Delete.

Notes

  • There are main and secondary mods. The main mods are on the thumbkeys. Know when to alternate between using Main and Secondary.

Example: the Main shift is on the right thumb. So you have to use your right hand. That works most of the time. But if you are right handed then sometimes you will need that hand to use your mouse. So you can activate shift with your left hand by pressing layer 1 and pressing shift on that layer. Another example would be if you need to use alt on your left hand and arrow keys with your right hand.

  • There are 2 ways to press enter:
  1. Tap and Hold the space thumb key.
  2. Press A+E combo.

Option 1 will work on any layer. Option 2 will only work on the base layer.

  • I turned the letter B into a combo: T+S because I hate extending my pinky to reach the regular B key. It is still there for use as well, though.

  • The Shift Layer (Red) has all the same symbols as any conventional keyboard setup. The Layer 2 - extended layer (Green) will have all of the other symbols.

  • Layer 1 - Extended (Green) & Layer 2 - Numrow (Purple) both have many unused keys. So you can get creative and add what you want.

  • The BKSP ,ARROW, and Left Thumb Cluster work the same across all layers.
