Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ACPI: APEI: Fix integer overflow in ghes_estatus_pool_init()

Change num_ghes from int to unsigned int, preventing an overflow
and causing subsequent vmalloc() to fail.

The overflow happens in ghes_estatus_pool_init() when calculating
len during execution of the statement below as both multiplication
operands here are signed int:

len += (num_ghes * GHES_ESOURCE_PREALLOC_MAX_SIZE);

The following call trace is observed because of this bug:

[ 9.317108] swapper/0: vmalloc error: size 18446744071562596352, exceeds total pages, mode:0xcc0(GFP_KERNEL), nodemask=(null),cpuset=/,mems_allowed=0-1

CVSS v3 base metrics

Attack vector: More severe the more the remote (logically and physically) an attacker can be in order to exploit the vulnerability.
Attack complexity: More severe for the least complex attacks.
Privileges required: More severe if no privileges are required.
User interaction: More severe when no user interaction is required.
Scope: More severe when a scope change occurs, e.g. one vulnerable component impacts resources in components beyond its security scope.
Confidentiality: More severe when loss of data confidentiality is highest, measuring the level of data access available to an unauthorized user.
Integrity: More severe when loss of data integrity is the highest, measuring the consequence of data modification possible by an unauthorized user.
Availability: More severe when the loss of impacted component availability is highest.

Weaknesses

Integer Overflow or Wraparound

The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Learn more on MITRE.
