New Radio Setup

ryandomresagility edited this page Oct 5, 2018 · 21 revisions

This document covers the procedure for updating the firmware on the FrSky Taranis X9D-Plus radio, and setting it up to work with the receiver in Cassie.

Setting up Radio

  • Put the radio in firmware update mode (hold the two horizontal trim buttons toward center and turn on the power switch) before attaching to a computer with a USB cable
  • Start the OpenTX Companion Software and open the cassie-model.eepe file (If this is your first time opening the OpenTX Companion Software, simply click "OK" when prompted to edit settings)
  • On the left hand side of the Companion, there are three download icons (denoted by red downward arrows) for downloading model and settings, radio backup, and firmware. Select each in turn, and specify either taranis-firmware.bin or radio-backup.bin as appropriate from the Companion Files folder. (The model and settings will be downloaded from the open cassie-model.eepe file)
  • When updating the firmware, the opening splash screen can be changed by selecting the "Use another start screen" radio button, and selecting the frsky-agility-logo.bmp file
  • Next, press the "SD Card Synchronization" button in the top menu and select the unzipped SD Card Image for the "Local Folder". The SD Card packaged with the Taranis is prone to failure and we would recommend replacing it with a higher quality card. The SD Card can be found in the battery compartment on the back of the radio
  • Finally (Do this step last), calibrate the analog inputs on the radio by following the instructions here

Pairing the Radio with the Receiver

  • Disconnect all wires from the receiver (Remember where they went!)
  • Use 100mil jumpers to connect channels 1 to 2 and 3 to 4 along the top row, and reattach the fully populated connector (Red, Black, Orange) into one of the bottom sockets, as shown in the pictures below
  • Press and hold down the F/S button on the receiver while turning on Cassie's logic power. The "LED" indicator should have both green and red LEDs illuminated
  • Press the menu button on the radio, followed by the page button. You should see the "MODEL SETUP" page on the radio screen
  • Scroll down using the "+" and "-" buttons until the "[Bind]" option is highlighted
  • Press the "ENT" button on the radio. Wait for the radio to beep and for the receiver's red LED to begin blinking. This will happen quickly, and the radio will not stop periodically beeping
  • Power off the receiver
  • Reconnect the wires in the standard configuration and remove the jumpers from the receiver
  • Your Taranis X9D-Plus is now paired with your Cassie machine and ready for operation
