Two independent Lambda-backed systems, both fully provisioned as Terraform IaC:
Problem: Three leaderboard endpoints ran expensive multi-table aggregation queries on every request — up to 758ms each, full DB load with every page view.
Solution: EventBridge triggers a Lambda every 30 minutes to pre-compute all three leaderboards and write snapshots to S3. The API uses a three-layer cache: process-level Map (sub-1ms) → S3 fetch (~300ms) → live DB fallback.

DB load: N queries/min → 3 queries per 30 minutes flat regardless of traffic.
AWS services: Lambda (Node 20), S3 (versioned bucket), EventBridge (scheduled rule), IAM (least-privilege: S3 PutObject + CloudWatch only)
Problem: When a debate closes, generating AI summaries via Claude Haiku blocked the API response for 0.5–2 seconds. Every debate completion made users wait.
Solution: API generates excerpt summaries instantly (local, ~1ms), inserts ballot posts, opens voting, and returns immediately. A fire-and-forget SQS publish triggers a Lambda that calls Claude Haiku async and updates the ballot posts in the DB. Users see excerpts for ~3 seconds, then the AI summary lands silently.

Result: Debate closing went from a blocking Anthropic API call to an instant response. AI summaries land async, ballots are always readable immediately.
AWS services: SQS (standard queue, 120s visibility timeout, long polling), Lambda (Node 20, SQS event source mapping, batch size 1), IAM (least-privilege: SQS ReceiveMessage/DeleteMessage + CloudWatch only)

Every architectural decision was made with scaling in mind:

The system has no O(n²) operations. Every hot path is O(1) or O(log n).
