WIP attempt at making the client work on 3.10 without using the grpc client which seems to have broken proto defs and doesn't it fix itself even if i build them from source with
make proto.I also added something we've used for a while, an optional flag to let the user raise a new
RequestErrorfrom the client on error response messages from the server.
