Plain-Text carnatic music notation

These are just guidelines to write carnatic songs in plain text. Such text can later be taken as input for better typesetting, manually or automatically using some software. At present there’s no such software to take notation in this format and produce scores automatically. But one can follow this work-flow (How To: Typeset Carnatic Music) for Inkscape to make beautiful notation/sheetmusic.

• Other practises include writing in Capitals to denote dirgam (S R G = s, r, g,) or writing as sa ri ga. These practises are avoided here for the sake of clarity and simplicity.

• When writing in Indian languages, one may use elongated letter forms or comma for dirgam. (ex: ஸா ரீ கா மா or ஸ, ரி, க, ம,) Some of these letters are not wider than their shorter counterparts (ex: நீ ரீ) It’s best to avoid such letters and use the shorter form with a comma instead.

நீ ரீ – 2 அட்சரங்கள். ஆனால் இந்த எழுத்துக்களின் அகலம் 1 அட்சர எழுத்துக்களைப் போன்றதே. கலந்து வரும் போது (ஸரீகமத) இவற்றின் நீளம் சரியாகத்தெரிவதில்லை. இவற்றுக்கு பதிலாக நி, ரி, என்று கமாவுடன் எழுதுவது நல்லது (ஸரி,கமத)

ஸ்வரங்களுக்கு எழுதும் எழுத்துக்களில் நி மற்றும் ரி தவிற பிற எழுத்துக்களை நெடிலாக்க கால் சேர்க்கப்படுகிறது: ஸா கா மா பா தா (நீ ரீ – கொம்பு) இவை குறிலை விட அகலமாக இருப்பதால் தீர்க்கம்/கார்வையைக் குறிக்கப் பயன்படுத்தலாம் (ஸரி,கமாபதாநிஸ’)
அல்லது நெடில்களை முற்றிலும் தவிர்த்து கமா(,) வையே பயன்படுத்தலாம் (ஸரி,கம,பத,நிஸ’)

  No additional spaces, dots or commas to fill for additional notes (Cha la not Cha__ la__)
