Since 3.4.3 RC1 is out, let's wait until after the release. If there is an RC2 we can add it but for now let's not merge it yet. We're also planning on a 3.5.0 soon-ish after 3.4.3 goes out, so then the change will go out with 3.5.0 (3.4.x branch will then likely get only security or urgent fixes).

(I was going to include the original PR into RC1 but seeing that it was 17 commits it was a bit of chore to cherry-pick them all so opted to skip it).

3.4.3 is out and we only had one RC. So let's close it.

The changes will still go into 3.5.0 as that's the next likely release. And then, after it will be part of 3.5.1, 3.5.2,...

If we do make another 3.4.x series release (3.4.4), say if there is a security issue, would could bring it in then.
