1 Overview ....................................................................................................
EPG files read and stored by the new WinEPGTM software (Articulate AssistantTM) are stored in the same file format as old EPG3 files. However, the new system organises files by Client( or Subject) name. There is a need for a simple utility to rename the files and put them where they can be found by Articulate AssistantTM. The import program fulfils this role. In addition it converts the old style EPG3 *.wav files into bona fide Windows *.wav format and performs a similar renaming function. It also converts EPG3 annotation files into text files, which are read by Articulate AssistantTM.
Registration ...................................................................................................
Make sure that Articulate AssistantTM is installed and registered on the PC. If
The quickest route to converting lots of files is as follows.
Create a new client .......................................................................................
It makes sense to create a new client for each new speaker in your old data set but if you’re really short of time or the dataset isn’t organised by subject then you can dump all of the files into one client (possibly giving the client the name of the dataset). To create a new client: Click on menu option File|New Client... The minimum information you require to enter is a Family Name.
Find and open old files ..................................................................................
- Click on File|Open All... and use the dialogue to search through your folders for the old data files.
- Select all the files that you want to convert for this client and
- Click the Open button.

When you have opened the files the following Dialogue box will appear.
- Select the Save File Option “Save with word as Filename”
- Select the “Don’t ask me again during this list” option
- Click the OK Save button
Result............................................................................................................
The Import program will load every file (looking for EPG, Wav and Ann versions) and convert them one at a time. You will see every set of files being loaded as it goes. I.e. you will see a waveform, EPG palates and annotation data if they can be found in the source directory.
To analyse the data you’ve just converted.
- Run Articulate AssistantTM
- Open the client you’ve just created data for. (The name you typed into the New Client Dialogue will appear in the list of clients in Articulate AssistantTM Open Client Dialogue.)

- The data should be visible in the prompt list. If you can’t see the files immediately, try scrolling down the list. It is probably better to set the prompt list box to show only recorded files (right click in the prompt list box for this option)
