If you're interested in these changes feel free to merge this. There's several minor functional changes, but mostly it's just new features.
I'll be making a number of other updates over the next few weeks or months. I'd be happy to take over development if you're interested, otherwise I'll probably release my own branch to rubygems, which you're also welcome to merge in as you see fit.
