Dear Astropy Community,
2+
3+
THe Finance Committee would like to give you some updates on our
4+
activities over the last year or so.

# NASA funding
7+
8+
In January of this year, several members of the project submitted a
9+
proposal to the NASA ROSES-2020 call, section E.7 (Support for Open
10+
Source Tools, Frameworks, and Libraries). The proposal included a mix of
11+
Project-wide infrastructure improvements, targeted work on specific
12+
areas of the code that are in need of support, enhancements to the our
13+
educational materials, and better support for affiliated packages. The
14+
full text (with some personal details redacted) is available at [1].
15+
16+
The proposal was successful, and has provides a further $634,590 to
17+
support the fantastic work being undertaken on Astropy. The Finance
18+
Committee will arrange processes for disbursing the funds which are
19+
consistent with the goals of the proposal and based on the model we've
20+
adopting for assigning Moore funding over the past couple of years.
21+
22+
This is a huge milestone for the project: it shows that we've
23+
successfully used the Moore funding to build a solid set of processes
24+
and a governance structure which enables us to obtain funding from more
25+
“traditional” academic sources. This is a great step towards ensuring
26+
the financial viability of the project into the future.

# Gemini contract
31+
32+
The Science User Support Department at Gemini Observatory has funded an
33+
Simon Conseil as an Astropy contractor to provide maintenance
34+
and development that benefits both the Astropy and DRAGONS projects on a
35+
part-time basis (averaging 5 hours per week over a period of a year or
36+
two). The details of the work are described in the SOW [2].
37+
38+
Having major facilities like Gemini invest in Astropy is another sign of
39+
both the critical role that the project plays in astronomical
40+
infrastructure worldwide, and of the increasing level of trust displayed
41+
in the project's responsible and sustainable governance.

# Distribution of Moore funds
46+
47+
We organized a process to select and distribute funds from the Moore
48+
grant to a variety of projects, suggested and selected by the project
49+
membership. We've announced results in detail in the past [3] so we
50+
won't reiterate them in detail here, but we're delighted to report that
51+
most many of the projects are now well underway.
52+
53+
We except to organize similar processes to distribute Moore and NASA
54+
funding in future years. We welcome your feedback on how to continue to
55+
improve our approach to make this as transparent and effective as
56+
possible.

# Meetings, workshops, and other travel
61+
62+
We've supported project members to participate in and represent Astropy
63+
at a number of fantastic conferences and workshops over the last year.
64+
These include:
65+
66+
- Three project members were funded to (vrirtually) attended ADASS XXX,
67+
where Brigitta Sipocz spoke on “astroquery: a community driven
68+
collaboration of data providers and data consumers”. [4]
69+
70+
- Three project members hosted the “Astropy and NumFocus Sponsored
71+
Projects” booth in the Virtual Exhibit Hall at AAS 237, while also ran
72+
two workshops: “Introduction to Astropy” and “Research with Astropy”. [5]
73+
74+
- Similarly, three project members paricipated in AAS 238, again hosting
75+
workshops entitled “Introduction to Astropy” and “Astronomical
76+
Research with Astropy”. [6]
77+
78+
- We also supported three project memnbers to participate in the SciPy
79+
2021 conference and workshop. [7]

# No longer an Interim Finance Committee
90+
91+
One of the first acts of the recently-elected Coordination Committee
92+
(“CoCo3”) was to confirm the Finance Committee, with its current
93+
members, as a part of standing project organization and to remove the
94+
work “interim” from its title. We're now just the “Astropy Finance
95+
Committee”! 🎉
96+
97+
Cheers,
98+
99+
John
