Non-Opioid Anesthesia for Perioperative Pain Management

Evidence, Implementation, and Future Directions

Status Project Methodology Evidence Window DOI License: CC BY 4.0

Overview

This repository contains an independent narrative review of recent literature on non-opioid and opioid-sparing strategies for perioperative pain management.

The review covers multimodal analgesia, regional anesthesia, selected non-opioid adjuncts, implementation considerations, and integration with enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways.

It is an educational and scholarly synthesis of published literature prepared as an independent academic portfolio project. It is provided for scholarly communication only. The author is a pre-medical applicant and not a licensed physician or other healthcare professional.

Scope

This review covers published literature on:

  • Multimodal perioperative analgesia frameworks
  • Regional and neuraxial anesthesia techniques
  • Non-opioid adjuncts: dexmedetomidine, ketamine, lidocaine, magnesium, acetaminophen, and NSAIDs
  • ERAS-integrated perioperative pathways
  • Implementation barriers, workflow considerations, and evidence gaps

The review focuses on adult perioperative settings. Its purpose is scholarly interpretation of published evidence rather than protocol development.

Manuscript Details

Field Detail
Title Non-Opioid Anesthesia for Perioperative Pain Management: Evidence, Implementation, and Future Directions
Author Collin B. George, BS
Format Independent narrative review
Methodological framing SANRA-aligned
Evidence window 2020–2024
DOI 10.5281/zenodo.17537969

No original clinical study, trial, or patient intervention was conducted. The discussion is interpretive and literature-based. The repository includes the manuscript source files, compiled PDF, bibliography, supplementary materials, and figure assets.

What This Repository Is Not

This is not:

  • Medical advice or clinical guidance
  • A clinical protocol or perioperative order set
  • A practice guideline or consensus statement
  • A substitute for anesthesiologist judgment or attending supervision
  • An official University of Washington or UW Medicine document
  • A document reviewed, approved, or authorized for institutional implementation

Any clinical application of concepts discussed in this review would require appropriate physician oversight, institutional review, and patient-specific clinical judgment.

Interpretive Caution

The literature reviewed here is heterogeneous in study design, procedure type, intervention structure, comparator selection, and reported endpoints. This manuscript should not be read as establishing universal superiority of any non-opioid anesthetic model.

Any reduction in perioperative opioid exposure must be interpreted alongside pain scores, rescue analgesia requirements, hemodynamic effects, recovery trajectory, patient comorbidity, and institutional capability.

This repository adopts a conservative scholarly framing. The reviewed strategies are not presented as universally applicable or ready for direct implementation.

Intended Use

This repository is appropriate for:

  • Scholarly review of perioperative pain management literature
  • Educational discussion of opioid-sparing anesthetic strategies
  • Academic portfolio presentation
  • Review of narrative evidence synthesis structure and formatting

It is not intended for direct patient care, real-world protocol adoption, or unsupervised clinical decision-making.
