This rule detects attempts to exploit CVE-2025-49706, an authentication bypass in Microsoft SharePoint Server. The attack involves sending a POST request directly to the ToolPane.aspx endpoint with the query parameter DisplayMode=Edit, which should only be accessible to authenticated users. The rule matches requests where:

  • The URI contains /_layouts/15/toolpane.aspx (case-insensitive, normalized).
  • The displaymode argument is set to edit (case-insensitive, normalized).

This approach ensures the rule is specific to the exploit path and parameter, minimizing false positives. The test config and nuclei template are adapted to expect a 403 response, which would indicate the WAF is blocking the exploit attempt.

Validation Checklist:

  • All value: fields are lowercase.
  • All relevant transform include lowercase.
  • No match.value contains capital letters.
  • Rule uses contains and equals as appropriate, not regex where not needed.
