Hardware Hacks
TODO: Add the rest of the cool hacks out there.
The post that started it all!. Use a 3.3V USB to Serial Adapter to interface your Davis VP2 or Vue console to your PC / Raspberry Pi / whatever. Here is the Expansion Connector pinout from that post
That soon led to this Wireless Zigbee interface by af4ex on WXForum
That was followed a little while later with a DIY datalogger hack using the same Atmel AT45DB011 flash chip used in the Davis design.
Davis Console Firmware 3.0+ included a "feature" that disabled direct serial connections to the console as well as third party data loggers. Torkelmj did an amazing writeup explored every nook and cranny on the issue.
Davis' method worked. For a little while, anyway. The combined efforts of a number of people are summarized in JoeBean's WXForum writeup showing how to build a datalogger that works with this newer firmware. It includes belfryboy's PCB design, a parts list, and some Arduino code that you'll need to program the security register in the Atmel flash chip. This last bit is needed to fool the console into thinking you've got a genuine Davis logger attached.
This epic hack comes from Ingineer on WXForm, who noticed that the Davis VP2 Console circuit board already has a spot for a datalogger EEPROM on it. After soldering that on, he went the extra mile and added Bluetooth connectivity via a low cost Bluetooth to Serial adapter. Check it out!. Note that you are going to have to program the serial register in the Atmel flash chip if you are going to try this with Firmware 3.0+ as described in the previous hack.
TODO Beef this up a whole lot.
