Remove mini_epoch backward compatibility

Description

In #1190, we renamed epoch to mini_epoch and maintained backward compatibility to support older runs that still used epoch.

This PR removes all remaining backward-compatibility code, fully eliminating epoch. With this change, the refactoring to mini_epoch is now complete.
