Looks like it's more logical to have the section Adding sample data at the top of the page Explore and analyze data with Kibana.

I think we shouldn't bring this section that high:

  • This page is a conceptual page and its first goal is to provide an overview of the Explore & Analyze section's content.

  • This is not a getting started, it doesn't have to be sequential. Presenting the capabilities first is actually more important.

  • Most instructional pages and tutorials start by asking to install sample data if users don't have their own, with a link to this section already. That should already cover our needs.

  • Adding sample data shouldn't be prioritized over ingesting real data, it shouldn't be the 1st thing users read on this landing page.

What we could do instead is to push users to Bring their data to Elastic first https://www.elastic.co/docs/manage-data/ingest by adding a link on "have data ready yet".

All good points. However, the mix of conceptual content with a procedure at the end of the page might be disruptive, especially when landing on this page from a tutorial.

What we could do instead is to push users to Bring their data to Elastic first https://www.elastic.co/docs/manage-data/ingest by adding a link on "have data ready yet".

Sounds good to me. In which case, we can just remove the section Add sample data.

I think we could either:

  • Do practically nothing. It's fairly fine to leave it there. It's a subsection of "Bringing it all together". Not too much emphasis about it, and ready to be consumed for whoever needs it in case they're testing kibana without their data, which is less and less likely given the evolving product onboarding flows that literally guide users into ingesting their own data when creating a new project or deployment.
  • Move it to its own page. I'd be fine with this living in a separate page that we could put towards the bottom of Explore & Analyze, given its lower importance. Alternatively, we could consider checking with the ingest docs team if such a page could live under "Manage data". If we choose to put it on its own page, whether we move it or not, we'll have to put redirections in place. I'm fine with it but this seems like a bit of effort for some minimal gain.

we have a page on sample data over here: https://www.elastic.co/docs/manage-data/ingest/sample-data

We could:

  1. Remove https://www.elastic.co/docs/explore-analyze/#gs-get-data-into-kibana. It's quite useless where it is now, and redundant with Sample data
  2. Update the links from the two tutorials Create a simple dashboard to monitor website logs and Create a dashboard with time series charts and from wherever the Sample data section is referenced.

👍 that sounds good to me. Didn't know we had something in Manage Data too. That's perfect. There will be a lot of links to change FYI.
