I am aware this repository is possibly being integrated into the OpenRailwayMap-CartoCSS repository.
Check with the maintainers which content should be kept from each repository / how ie. funding might be handled.

I don't want to focus the content of the repository too much on donations. Donations are very welcome, but is not the main goal of this project. To have it has the first thing in the readme is a bit too much in my opinion.

Instead I will add the links (but not the images) in the https://github.com/hiddewie/OpenRailwayMap-vector?tab=readme-ov-file#contributing contributing section of the readme.

The images are generated/hosted by an external provider https://shields.io/ which could then gather data from every user viewing the Github page.

That is fine. I am okay with leaving it as-is.

For your information, images come from simpleicons at https://simpleicons.org/
they are no longer hosted by shields itself (only simpleicons as a npm/dependency)
(some images might still be changed(derivatives generated) by shields, though I am not sure.)

You can make similar 'badges' / inline icons with existing links using regular markdown.
Images are only in addition to text for readibility / ease of recognition (similar to GitHub's sponsor links).
They can be moved to the respective section and could be styled so they are less intrusive.
