As far as I can tell, the way to make the spherical RTree to work is by getting the spherical envelope to work. However, this may not be enough, as I still need to understand how to translate the algorithms from the paper linked to in #27 to the RTree library.
(As a side-note, the rstar devs appear to have somewhat given up on supporting a spherical RTree)
