this solves the following issue that i have, which is that in bitlbee or pidgin, after 20 minutes or so, i stop receiving new messages in any rooms. this may or may not be related to issue #32
the "solution" is to punch sync in the face if it hangs for more than a minute.
NOTE:
this is an ugly patch for an ugly bug.
im PR'ing it because it works for me and MIGHT work for someone else, NOT because its polished and ready for merge upstream, which it is of course obviously not.
