How Data Centers Use Water, and How We’re Working to Use Water Responsibly by Alex Setmajer for Equinix https://blog.equinix.com/blog/2024/09/19/how-data-centers-use-water-and-how-were-working-to-use-water-responsibly/
I found this article interesting because I wanted to know by how drastic the depletion of usable water usage is, pre- and post- widespread ChatGPT usage to better understand how detrimental generative AI data centers are to our usable water supply. I knew that general searches made through Google Chrome or most search engines use water, and internet services that require large scale data storage use water, but I didn't know how much less the water usage was vs. a singular ChatGPT query. I saw a lot of online discussion surrounding how bad ChatGPT was for the environment and I wanted to confirm via numbers that this was true, and to what extent.
