@pabs3: Thanks for the PR! Unfortunately, it is against an old version of master. In particular, since then I merged some old setuptools changes by @jdufresne that have significantly changed the situation.

Could you check whether those changes fix your problem? If not, maybe you have suggestions for next steps?
