I don't know if I'll ever complete this; I'm keeping this open in case we want to implement a similar strategy for testing: having an overlay of software that is just there for the purpose of our testing (or someone's factory testing) and that is not prevent in the final image.
We're discussing testing strategy, so hopefully will have some visibility on that soon!
