Mod FAQ

Who designed this mod?

I am hard pressed to find the originator of the mod as it has been posted on Reddit and youtube several times. I claim no invention here, just attempting to put together a nice document for the community to find and collaborate on.

Reddit posts: https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/1589bd4/modded_the_new_go_plus_to_autothrow_greatballs/ https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/1auvp73/i_perfected_my_mod_for_the_pokemon_go_plus/ https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonGoPlusPlus/comments/15ac2lo/modifying_pok%C3%A9mon_go_plus_video_tutorial/

What does the mod do?

The mod is intended to make the Pokemon Go Plus+ more useful and less annoying. The mod removed the vibration function permanently and allows for auto catching with great, or ultra, balls instead of only normal pokeballs. If the mod is implemented in the way described in this guide it will also make the speaker much quieter than on an an un-modded device.

How difficult is the mod?

The mod is relatively easy to execute, with some level of comfort using a soldering iron required.

What does the mod require?

  1. A small P0 screwdriver
  2. A soldering iron that is appropriate for small electronics
  3. Some solder
  4. Three small wires, ~3 inches long
    • Ideally stranded core, small gauge
    • The wires from inside a network cable work great for this
  5. A through hole style, three leg micro slide switch
  6. A decent hot glue gun (optional)
    • You can find other methods of securing the switch but this was easy for me
  7. A multimeter with a continuity setting to confirmation or troubleshooting (optional)

Mod instructions

Prep notes

  • There are three types of screws in the device
    • The black external screws
    • The silver self tapping screws to secure the plastic components
    • The silver machine screws that secure the boards to the shells
  • Now is a good time to cut, strip, and tin the wires you will be using

Disassembly

  1. Unscrew the two small black screws at the bottom of the Plus+
  2. Use a plastic pry tool to pry front of the device loose
    • There are small wires connecting the front face to the board in the main body, be careful
    • This can be difficult the first time around because the battery has adhesive on it's back, go slowly
    • There are clips at intervals around the device, but once you have an opening you can pull slowly but firmly
  3. Once the front and main body are separated open it like a clamshell
  4. Unscrew the several screws holding the battery into the main body
  5. Lift the battery out and gently pull the battery connector up/out from the main board
    • This simply pulls directly up if the main body is on a table like surface
  6. Unscrew the USB-C connector daughter board from the main housing, and pull the connector out of it's seat
  7. Unscrew the main board screws
  8. Lift the main board out of the main body
    • The vibration motor may need some help getting out of it's seat
    • The Speaker/housing is attached to the main body with mild adhesive, pull gently to release
    • There is a little rubberized dome that sits between the board and the rear of the main body for the rest button. This can come off when removing the main board, but is easy to seat back into place on the inside rear of the main body.
  9. Unscrew the board connected to the face shell, the button board.
  10. Remove the button board from the face shell
  11. Flip both boards over so the component side, that was previously hidden, is facing you

Soldering

  1. De-solder the vibration motor from the main board
    • Note which pad is connected to the Red wire, and which is connected to the Black
    • Red should be more towards the middle of the board
    • Black should be more towards the edge
  2. Solder the three wires to the legs of the micro switch, one wire to each leg
    • I found gently splaying out the left and right legs, away from the center, was helpful here and didn't cause any issues down the road
  3. For the next steps you want the wires to go across the board from where the vibration motor was and the switch should end up near the speaker, as the switch is going to go through the speaker hole
    • Crappy diagram: bad diagramn
  4. Solder the wire connected to the middle switch leg to the pad where the black wire was on the vibration motor
    • See crappy diagram black wire
  5. Solder the wire connected to the left switch leg to the pad where the red wire was on the vibration motor
    • See crappy diagram red wire
  6. Solder the wire connected to the right switch leg to the test pad on the button board, kind of off by itself
    • See crappy diagram blue wire
  7. Once the wire are all soldered properly you should be good to start reassembly
    • Now is a good time to bust out a multimeter and make sure you have continuity between the legs and the pads

Re-Assembly

  1. Start by screwing the button board back into the face shell
    • The board is keyed and only can go back in one way
    • Make sure the new wire takes a similar path as the factory wires
    • If you wish you can add some tape over the LEDs at this point if you don't want them or if you want to diffuse them further with clear tape
  2. Take the main body and use your screw driver, or something small to push the fabric speaker mesh that lines the speaker hole (near the USB-C hold) into the main body and remove it
    • There is some adhesive in place that can make this tricky, but you can do it!
  3. Place the main board back into the main body, with the new wires running under the board and the switch coming out the opposite end of the board from where it was soldered, near where the speaker is.
    • There are key posts that can help with locating here, and a notch near the seat for the vibration motor to align to
    • Make sure the rubber dome is properly seated in it's place on the inside rear of the main body before putting the main board back in
  4. Screw the main board back into place
  5. Seat and screw the USB-C daughter board back into place
  6. Disconnect the speaker from the plastic acoustic chamber
    • The metal+thing plastic speaker should relatively easily separate from the harder plastic acoustic chamber
    • This chamber simply help amplify the sound, but also takes up the space we need for the switch
  7. Place the speaker, driver down, onto the inside bottom of the main bod
  8. Place the switch so the switch slider goes through the speaker hole
    • The switch legs should be above the speaker, but not making contact
    • it is OK for the switch housing to make contact with the metal from the back of the speaker
  9. Make sure none of the wires or legs are touching each other and put a small amount of hot glue on the top and sides of the switch, and it's legs
    • This can help form a barrier between the leg wires, the speaker and also mechanically holds the switch in place so it can be actuated without moving the entire switch housing
    • If you overdo the hot glue you may need to cut some away so the face can seat properly onto the main body when closing up, no big deal, just be aware
    • Let the glue cool before moving on
  10. Seat the battery connection straight down into it's socket
  11. Screw the battery housing back into the main body
  12. Starting with the tab where factor wires meet leave the button housing, clip the tab into it's seat and the front case should clip into the main body
  13. Screw the black external screws back into the bottom where the USB-C connector is

Testing

If the switch was installed as described; When the slider is near the USB-C port the mod is off, and when the slider is away from the USB-C port, the mod is on

  1. With the mod off pair your plus+ to GO
  2. In the Plus+ settings disable auto catching
  3. Go to an area with a couple Pokemon
  4. The Plus+ should try to catch one
    1. The light on the Plus+ will blink green a couple times
    2. The light will stay solid
    3. If you click the button it will start flashing white (Catching)
  5. Turn the mod on and wait for the plus+ to try and catch another Pokemon
    1. The light on the Plus+ will blink green a couple times
    2. The light should automatically go to the white catching cycle
  6. Congratulations your mod has been installed and is working correctly

Usage FAQ

How the heck do I use this thing?!?

Generally in the GO settings for the Plus+ you want to disable pokemon auto catching and auto pokestop spinning when the mod is ON (away from the charge port) this will let the mod do the most work for you and give you the most selection over which balls you are using. I also highly recommend turning quick reconnect on to make your life a little easier.

My Plus+ isn't charging?!?

Unfortunately this is normal and has nothing to do with the mod. You can use a small object to tap the reset button on the rear of the device and usually this gets things working properly again.

If you need to factory reset the device you can hold the small top button then hold the rear reset button for ~15 seconds and release. You will need to re-pair your plus+ after this factor reset and any unsynced sleep data saved on the device will be lost.

My Plus+ doesn't catch, only blinks red three times?!?

This is normal when you are out of the chosen ball type. Go into the settings and change the ball selected for the plus+, or get more balls, and it should go back to normal.

My Plus+ is freaking out?!?

If you are getting erratic lights, or similar, on your Plus+ it likely means your Plus+ disconnected from GO with the mod switch ON and stuff got weird. This is completely normal, you should be able to just re-connect the Plus+ to GO if you have quick reconnect enabled. If you are having issues still, or you do not have quick reconnect enabled:

  1. Turn the mod switch OFF (switch toward the charging port)
  2. Hold the main button until it stops what it is doing
  3. Tap the main button and it should be blinking white
  4. Re-connect in the GO app
  5. Then turn the mod switch back ON if you so desire

My Plus+ isn't throwing great/ultra balls?!?

  1. Make sure your mod switch is ON (switch away from the charge port)
  2. Make sure and disable auto catching pokemon in the settings when you want to use great or ultra balls
    • When auto-catching pokemon is enabled the mod isn't catching pokemon at all, that's just the normal function

How do I track my sleep?!?

  1. Make sure the Plus+ is not currently connected to GO
  2. Make sure the mod is OFF (toward the charge port)
  3. If you can tap the button and get a consistent blinking white light, you are good to go
    • If nothing happens you are likely still connected to GO
    • if weird things happen, different lights etc.. your mod switch is likely still ON
  4. Lay the plus+ on a flat surface and hold the main button
  5. The light should pulse blue and if you have sound enabled Pikachu will sing a lullaby
    • You can enable silent mode by holding the top button and the main button for two seconds with the mod OFF, repeat the steps to disable silent mode
  6. Go to sleep ...zzzzzz
  7. When you wake up hold the main button again and it should flash party lights, indicating that you successfully recorded sleep data
  8. Next time you connect the Plus+ in GO you should receive sleep tracking credit and receive rewards at the time indicated in your settings
    • if you left the device on a table or something static generally you will only get about 4 hours of credit. If you place on your mattress you can get your full sleep credit. It know when you are trying to cheat :)
