So far the CI breakage is all unrelated to this PR. I'll rebase once this is addressed.

Edit: The uninlined_format_args lint probably needs disabling unless you want to bump the MSRV from 1.63 to at least 1.66. I haven't looked into the dangerous-implicit-autorefs.

Thanks @alex - I don't think that boringssl panic is related to my PR either. No idea what would cause that.

Pretty sure that's a flakey test, that we ought to debug eventually, but not today.
