Migrate Azure DevOps Repository

Learn how to migrate repositories from Azure DevOps to GitHub using the ado2gh CLI tool.

Welcome

  • Who is this for: DevOps engineers, developers, and IT teams looking to migrate from Azure DevOps to GitHub

  • What you'll learn: How to set up migration tools, configure permissions, and migrate repositories using GitHub's official migration tools

  • What you'll build: A complete Azure DevOps repository migration workflow with mock repository setup and the ado2gh CLI extension for migration

  • Prerequisites:

    • Basic knowledge of Git and version control
    • Azure DevOps subscription (free tier is sufficient)
    • GitHub organization owner access (free tier is sufficient)
    • Familiarity with command-line tools
  • How long: This exercise takes less than 60 minutes to complete.

In this exercise, you will:

  1. Set up a mock Azure DevOps project.
  2. Configure GitHub migration tools and permissions
  3. Migrate the Azure DevOps repository to GitHub
  4. Integrate a GitHub repository with Azure DevOps Boards and Pipelines

How to start this exercise

Simply copy the exercise to your account, then give your favorite Octocat (Mona) about 20 seconds to prepare the first lesson, then refresh the page.

Having trouble? 🤷

When copying the exercise, we recommend the following settings:

  • For owner, choose your personal account or an organization to host the repository.

  • We recommend creating a public repository, since private repositories will use Actions minutes.

If the exercise isn't ready in 20 seconds, please check the Actions tab.

  • Check to see if a job is running. Sometimes it simply takes a bit longer.

  • If the page shows a failed job, please submit an issue. Nice, you found a bug! 🐛
