configure.ac requires autoconf 2.61 and the docs for this version states that the macro AS_HELP_STRING should be used in favor of AC_HELP_STRING.
The macro AC_CONFIG_HEADERS (plural) should be used according to: https://www.gnu.org/software/autoconf/manual/autoconf-2.61/autoconf.html#Configuration-Headers
AC_PROG_LIBTOOL was replaced by LT_INIT in libtool 2 in 2008. https://www.gnu.org/software/libtool/manual/libtool.html#LT_005fINIT
