Before Emacs 31 `defvar-local' required a default value.`
There where 76 warnings before. Now there are 41.
`defadvice' is now obsolete. Use recommended advice mechanics.

This is a pretty small pull request. Most of the changes are minor documentation changes.
I briefly tested this on Emacs 29.4 so this should fix #560
