There is a lack of evidence of any confusion between "date versioning" and "semantic versioning". No such confusion has been raised to date.
The current guideline follows W3C PubRules: https://www.w3.org/pubrules/ , which has been in use for W3C publications for decades. The rationale was to provide the CG and the wider Solid community with an approach consistent with established W3C practice.
Your proposal lacks justification and introduces confusion and unnecessary complexity.
