initial draft for the w3f grant application

Project Abstract

ChessOnChain (https://play.chessonchain.io/) is a multichain, decentralized gaming layer that redefines chess through competitive tournaments, provable gameplay NFTs, and seamless onboarding across 200+ wallets. We’re building the future of strategy gaming—where every move counts, every win is immortalized, and players own their game history.

♟ Proof of Gaming
Our “Proof of Gaming” system mints NFTs at the end of every match—containing board state, game metadata, and winner verification—all stored on-chain. These NFTs can be Integrated into any marketplace that support the NFTs standards of supported chains. With built-in support for challenges, bounties, and tournaments, ChessOnChain provides a complete Web3 chess economy for both casual and competitive players.

ChessOnChain State
With over 10,000+ gameplays, 2,000 weekly active users, and 500+ participants in our debut tournaments,. We’ve successfully collaborated with Unique Network to deploy NFT-backed games and are integrating more chains and player-friendly features every quarter.

This proposal outlines our Polkadot integration milestones—ranging from technical implementation to scaling high-impact tournaments—designed to showcase the power of the Polkadot ecosystem.

Thanks a lot for the application. However, the grants committee decided to close it. The main reason is that we think that this is less about developing new open-source software or research (the main focus of the grants program), but rather about finding product-market fit at this stage, and should be funded by VCs or in a similar way. Also, in our opinion, it will be pretty difficult for any chess game to compete with the established companies (chess.com) at this stage, which have an existing community.
